Post-Oscars... finally!

Well friends, it looks like I've done it again. I've abandoned you for too long. The Oscars came and went... they were a pretty good show! Steve and Alec were funny... Sandra won and almost made me cry. Then Sandra got cheated on. Then Sandra told us she was a mom to a little boy, and boy is he cute. Goodness... so much has happened! Or not... as we hit the post-Oscars drought of movies, there were few good ones out there to go and see.

Saw "The Runaways"... was OK for a chick bio-pic. Every time Dakota picked up a cigarette or drug I wanted to yell.. DAKOTA NO! think of your PARENTS! Your INNOCENCE! you're still a little GIRL! Crazy? yes... I know I am. Kristen Stewart was just mediocre as usual. Always doing the same hair thing, the biting of the lip thing... teenage angst at it's finest? nope... probably not.

Then there were the Nicholas Sparks tear jerkers... well I guess "Dear John" was before the Oscars... but then there was the "Last Song". Usually I try to read the Sparks books before I go to the movie... since I know it'll be a quick read. But then I just get angry that it's not the same as the book, like I did once again seeing "Dear John". I didn't get to read "The Last Song"... so I couldn't complain about the similarities or not. Although, Sparks wrote "Last Song" JUST so it could be made into a movie that Miley could be in. She was pretty awful... poor Greg Kinnear, Kelly Preston and cute kid who was in "Martian Child" with my fave, John Cusack.

Saw "Iron Man 2"... definitely not as good as the first. There was humor lacking in the writing. As much as RDJ and Don Cheadle tried to carry the movie with their performances, the script was pulling them down.

But now as the summer blockbusters approach... even those seem lack-luster. There's the big budget "Wall Street 2" sequel.. the "Prince of Persia" that just hit... and MAN... JAKE Gyllenhaal... IS HOT. he is also funny and seems like a nice person ( I know this because he was on Jimmy Fallon this week... DUH). I'd date him. If Reese doesn't want him... it's OPEN SEASON!

As for cute Rom Coms... "Letters to Juliet" was super sweet. It was almost heartbreaking to see Redgrave up on the screen again after all that she's lost this year. There was one scene with her brushing an upset Amanda Seyfried's hair... and that moment especially reminded me of her loss of daughter Natasha Richardson. What a nice team... bad things like that don't deserve to happen to nice people. My other enjoyable rom com I saw was "Just Wright"... sure Allyson and I were the minority in this theater... and sure the other people annoyed the heck out of me by talking the whole time... but I wasn't about to turn around and say something. I just love me some Queen Latifah in anything. "Last Holiday" was on tv tonight, but of course the channel was all messed up so I couldn't really enjoy it. I think she made a better pair with LL Cool J romantically, but she and Common also had great chemistry... but seemed to be really only on the friend level.

Well my friends, it's late and I'm gonna hit the sack. Being on duty for work means you never know when you'll be woken up in the mornings sometimes!

For now, enjoy your summer movies... dive into that Netflix queue if you're gaining lots of time because most of your favorite TV shows are on hiatus for the summer season.

oscars, one week and counting

this will be a short post. I'll write more before the oscars, but it is late and I must go to bed!

Saw An Education on the flight back from Poland yesterday... I know, it's a complete crap way to watch a film... but I wanted to see it since I didn't know if the theaters would still be showing it when I got back.

Carey Mulligan certainly deserves her small buzz. She was really fantastic. The whole storyline is slightly creepy, but I've seen worse... and certainly the most disturbing Oscar goes to Precious this year. Peter Sarsgaard is a good 30 something creepster who befriends the 16 yr old Mulligan. I also always love seeing Alfred Molina in films. We needed more of his over-bearing totally morally skewed father on screen!

Otherwise, I leave you all with this feature from Esquire on Roger Ebert. Truly an inspirational story. I've looked up to Ebert since before I can remember. His Sunday show with Siskel was a staple in our home. I will truly, honestly miss reading his reviews every Friday when he eventually leaves us. He's funnier than ever, writing almost as much and remains to be a constant in the film community. While you might not all agree with him (I don't always either) he's been an amazing figure in the critic world. This article left me in tears... but you know me, I'm an emotional sap anyway.

oscars update

Oscar update!
I added The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, A serious Man and District 9 to the top of my queue, so hopefully I'll get those five finished before March 7th! I'm on a time crunch since I'll be gone on business in Poland from the 18th til the 27th. But even if I just did the 5 days when I get back - one per day, I'd make it. And even have 2 extra days!

Still have to find time to see An Education especially since Carey Mulligan is nominated for Best Actress... and I like to see all the actors in each category too. I'll have to see if The Last Station is playing anywhere around here, because if I've seen that one, then I've seen all the best actress noms! Once I've seen The Hurt Locker, I'll only have to see Colin Firth in A Single Man and I'll have seen all the best actor noms.
Surprisingly, I've already seen all the Best Supporting Actress noms... Mo'Nique is definitely a favorite for both me and the academy because of her globe win. But Vera was Awesome! in Up in the Air and Maggie Gyllenhaal's nom for Crazy Heart is well deserved too.

I'm not doing so well for Best Supporting Actor noms... have only seen Invictus! 1 out of 5! Ah! But again... if I get to Basterds and The Last Station then I'll be 3 out of 5. Still haven't decided on The Lovely Bones... got such mixed reviews, so it's not high on my list. Though Stanley Tucci certainly looks creepy in the previews! Good for him, he's one of my celebrity favorites.

This weekend will be seeing Valentine's Day and maybe I'll get to An Education since it's a long weekend! YESSSSS.

Avatar & Dear John

So I finally hunkered down in my movie theatre chair this past Saturday morning for an 11 am showing of Avatar (and let me tell you, it was BUSY for an 11 am Saturday showing)... Had put on my SNAZZY real 3-d glasses as soon as I got them, yes I was that kid walking through the movie theatre with my glasses on, and prepared my butt for a solid 3 hours of sitting.

And isn't it interesting to see a sci-fi movie with your father on your right who's seen it once before and your good friend sitting on your left who doesn't usually do sci-fi flicks... If you're like me... I wonder constantly what they're thinking... are they sleeping behind those glasses? Are they bored? Are they loving it?

So anyway... I was VERY impressed with the graphics. I mean, when people talk about how crisp and detailed they are... those descriptions don't even do them justice! Seriously, I would go again just to stare at the skin of the Navi... the details of the forest... everything! Even the way they did Sam Worthington's legs with CGI... very real.

The story line was not as bad as I was expecting. I prepped myself for the worst, so I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't totally awful. Sure, Cameron's script isn't worthy of a best screenplay nom (in my opinion)... that's why he didn't get one. If you're a sci-fi fan or even just an avid book reader/movie watcher, you know his story isn't original. It's like a combination of Fern Gully, Dances with Wolves and a little Pocahontas mixed in... nothing we haven't seen before in a script.

And the critics are right, the parts of Titanic that pulled on our heartstrings and got us so emotionally involved just aren't here in this latest Cameron flick. It certainly is a film of our time for the technical aspects and I did enjoy Zoe and Sam's performances... they did what they could with the script. Not overly amazing, but they did a good job with what they were given. I could stand to stare at Sam for another 3 hours... ; ) Maybe he could read the phone book to me with his sweet Aussie accent (yes, I know he was born in England... but grew up in Australia).

But before I saw Avatar; I saw Dear John on Friday evening with friends. Dear John certainly makes Avatar oscar worthy. The script was turned into this lifeless story... given the book isn't much better, but this script just picked up and changed all the wrong parts of Sparks' novel.

The best part of Dear John was Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum's chemistry with each other. Their chemistry was sooo good in fact, it made you question why they broke up about 2/3rds of the way through the film. They just looked like they had so much fun making the film together and I honestly question whether their real life significant others would be jealous of the on-screen chemistry. HOT HOT HOT.

2010! Oscars!

I have seriously failed all few of you who may be reading this blog. I promise that in 2010 I will take the time to sit, write, share, contemplate, and enjoy good film, television and pop culture.

2010 has turned out to be a good year so far, I'm very grateful for great friends, great opportunities, a great job... I'm really optimistic for what the rest of 2010 will bring.

And it's that time of year! MY FAVORITE! OSCAR time! The Oscar nominations are out and it's going to be an INTERESTING show because for the first time we have 10 Best Picture Noms! Which will make my father's Oscar contest verryyyyy interesting. But I'm also excited to see how these new changes turn out... .who knows, it could be so bad they'll be back to 5 again next year.

And how sad I've only seen 4 out of the 10... I'm very far behind this year. Avatar is on my list for this weekend, The Hurt Locker is in my netflix queue and I'm going to try to get to An Education before that leaves! Inglorious Basterds is also on the netflix queue and I've got to see about District 9 and A Serious Man.

I really enjoyed Crazy Heart, the music, the acting, the story... all of it! T Bone Burnett really does a great job of making the song an integral part of the movie, like he's done with his others too.

Post Grad

Last night I went to see "Post Grad" with a friend knowing that it was certainly not going to be something spectacular and I may even end up hating it because as another friend said on the phone when I told her I was going to see this movie - "I would probably hate that movie because it's been over a year since I've graduated and yes, i have a job but it's not my dream job and Alexis Bledel will probably struggle to find a job but in the end it'll all turn out perfect and she'll get the dream guy too. Well that hasn't happened in my life yet..." And I agreed.

But I was pleasantly surprised... (SPOILER ALERT) even though pretty much everything DOES work out for her in the end, including getting the perfect guy (but giving up her perfect job to move across the country to be with said guy) she finds happiness.

I liked this movie because Bledel as Ryden Malby pulls off the whole bright eyed recent grad optimistic look to a T. Her friend, Zach Gilford from "Friday Night Lights" plays a good boy next door. CAROL BURNETT is her SPUNKY GRANDMA ( I LOVE Carol Burnett) and the rest of the Malby family Michael Keaton, Jane Lynch (who seems to be in everything lately) and Bobby Coleman (from " Martian Child") all made me smile with their wackiness.

What was lacking in this movie was more screen time for best friend Gilford and crazy grandma Burnett. I just need more of Carol Burnett in my every day life... DOESN'T EVERYBODY?!?!

The movie is simple and enjoyable. It also has a cute soundtrack. You feel connected to the family in their crazy adventures. You relate to the way Ryden feels hopeful and trapped all at the same time. You feel bad for their sexy Brazilian neighbor's cat when Michael Keaton runs it over. And you're nervous when little brother Malby's breaks break in his box car derby race and he sails into the lake only to find out the water is shallow enough for him to stand in.

As a kind of recent grad myself, I could especially relate to living at home, trying to figure out a job quickly enough so you can move out of said home... all while trying to figure out what really makes you happy in life.

I'd recommend this movie. And as Roger Ebert puts it "But here is the first movie in a long time that had me actually admitting I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel." And I agree with him!

i can smell it in the air...

That time of year is coming... i can smell it in the air... it's so CLOSE and yet i feel like it's still so far away. AWARDS season is almost here!

This is the time of year when sometimes I find it a struggle to find enough time to get to see them all. When my friends want to kill me because all I want to do on the weekends is see movies. I love how much time I get to sit in the dark theater and jump into other decades/places/events/adventures. Usually at the end of that hour and a half to two hours I just want to continue sitting in those padded movie theater seats and wait for another one to start.

Here are some I'm looking forward to - and I'm not saying they're going to be great - they've just peaked my interest...

- "Where the Wild things Are" Loved the book as a child - the children museum in San Francisco even had a Maurice Sendak exhibit that I got to go to. (It was awesome.)

- "The Lovely Bones" - Love the book. Excited for movie. Interested to see what P.Jackson does with it. It's tricky material.

- "Taking Woodstock" - Ang Lee is a director I find pretty interesting - I also like Emile Hirsch, though he seems to have a small role. I'm looking forward to this one, especially since it comes out sooner rather than later.

- "It's Complicated" - Here you can insert "WTF JENNA?!? what are you 55 years old and going through menopause.?!!?" And the answer is yes, sometimes I feel as though I am. I hope that when I am actually 55 and going through menopause... that someone will be making films for old folks like me like Nancy Myers does. I have a soft spot for her films. I enjoy them, they make me smile - most of the time.

- "New York, I Love You" - The whole crew of cast and writers and directors leads me to believe that this will hit big with awards season. Or completely flop. who knows. I'm looking forward to it.

- "Fantastic Mr. Fox" - Wes Anderson is back with some of his seasoned regulars and then some. But this time he's using handmade stop motion techniques. It looks pretty good, except I don't know if I like the way the foxes look. Hair too fake. And I'm not sure how wild and out there this one will be since they're targeting the kids this time more than usual.

- "Love Happens" - And I can probably tell you what happens in this one, but I'm a sucker for romcoms. I like Aaron Eckhart too. And Jen Aniston. ANDDDDDDD Judy GREER. i just wish she would be the leading lady for once. She's always the quirky best friend. but i guess that's why i like her so much, I'm a quirky best friend.

- "Amelia" - I've been FASCINATED with her ever since I was a little kid - I think it's one of America's most fascinating history stories. I also love Mira Nair. She came to Danbury to speak in the fall and she's just a wonderful lady. (I hope this is better than "The Namesake" though ) But I love love love Monsoon Wedding.

- "Whip It" - Hahah I like Drew Barrymore. I like Ellen Page. I like Jimmy Fallon. I like Marcia Gay Harden. I like Juliette lewis - even though she looks like a crack pot sometimes. I even like Kristen wiig. I just hope for Drew's sake this this isn't completely awful.

things to think about

As life is seemingly speeding by faster than the speed of sound now, I've been trying to figure out what really makes me happy in life and what I really want to do/get out of life. We all want to do the get rich quick thing, and that doesn't even mean money wise... just means you want to get wherever you want to be ASAP. For some reason I've got this stupid idea in my head that I've got to have it all figured out... like... NOW. which is FALSE. but at the same time, it's frustrating being a college graduate - having a full time job that isn't awful, but it's not something I LOVEEE and see myself doing forever - and just wanting to figure out what I love so I don't feel like I'm wasting so much time. It's a catch-22!

Maybe you all can help me figure out what to do in life - since there are obviously so many of you...
I know i like people & being social - since i seemingly want to catch up and find out what's going on in everyone's lives before settling into doing real work.
I love to write - but unfortunately I've been slacking on this thing - sorry - and my job only permites me to write travel instructions and flight emails to 18-25yr olds.
i like to plan things - but have to get better organized - i'm not totally awful, but there is lots of room for improvement.
i love pop culture & film - holler.
i want to travel - i've been bitten again, per usual.
i like being artistic - photography, general graphic design, pottery, using color in everything in life.


OK GO, make me a career!

i can't figure out if i'd like/ be good at teaching... that is another option?!

And then watching the documentary "young @ heart" ( ummm see it if you havent!!) i was just sitting there in awe of these awesome senior citizens. they know what they like. what keeps um happy. but i suppose that may have taken until retirement to realize what they really loved doing! but these people just had an awesome outlook on life, and i tend to have an opptimistic view on life, but sometimes i get very pessimistic and i get worried about my future.

For example, do i want to travel for a while? go to grad school? go to grad school abroad and travel at the same time?! what would i study in grad school (hence why i've got to figure something out soon). do i want to move out and screw saving money and waste it all on rent but really be out on my own!? AHHHHHH decisions!!!!!!!! HATE THEM.

but i must go to bed... so much to think about it seems. i know (well, hope) i can start heading in the right direction soon.

AHHHH i totally suck! these past two months have been CRAZY! and as soon as june is over, i'll update.

i need a deck

i have been an awful blogger. i apologize. it seems as though i'm always saying it and then the one thing I tell people when they ask how i like my job is, 'i miss writing.' it's a catch 22 i suppose.

i'm doing a quick blog about decks. I have just decided that my house needs a deck. it's 81 degrees outside and I would like a place to sit where bugs won't crawl up on my blanket and my neighbor's dog won't come attacking me when he exits his front door. my neighbor has almost no control over his female black lab named maggie. And she is a sweet dog, but sometimes she attacks you when you are carrying large amount of groceries or laying out in the sun trying to read.

decks are awesome because A. you can sit in a chair and read. B. the only bugs that come get you are ones that fly or climb up the deck... props to them for getting up there. C. you can have parties on a deck. D. .... they're just plain AWESOME pour le summer.

i need a deck. i will start making calls tomorrow... but then it involves so many other things like putting french doors in the dining room if per se we wanted a wrap around deck... and then there's like other crap that we'd have to do if we added this thing... i wish it were simpler. shucks.

a very serious topic of conversation...

Hello.

Today I will be discussing a VERY serious topic.

It's bigger than what they're talking about on the view. More important than whether or not Jenn aniston and john mayer broke up and certainly more serious than the stimulus package.

I'm talking about the lack of hair products for redheads. More specifically things like bobby pins and hair ties. There are ones for black hair, brown hair, and even blondes... but do you see any products for redheads lining the shelves of CVS?!?!.... NO.

And there lies the problem. We redheads are already a dying breed. And the lack of hair products is certainly not encouraging anyone to get out there and keep the redheaded gene alive.

I've been recently thinking about starting a business with my dear friend Adrien, and today whilst standing in the dimly lit CVS aisle, I realized that redheads do not have a selection of things for their hair. So I quickly texted her to tell her about my idea, and she guessed that they may have things for people like us at higher class salons, but even if they did, that's hard to find and not something the common redhead has time for. After all, we are a crazy bunch!

So if you all out there is blogosphere world have any ideas for how to get my company started or set out to convince companies like goodie to make redheaded products and give me a share of it... let me know!



Here I am trying to show you that it doesn't match my hair. But it's not very well lit where I am and therefore that is a bad example.

Otherwise, my life is crazier than ever. I'm off again traveling on business to the armpit of America... I mean... Atlantic City! So we'll see if I win any money... I will probably not.

Tomorrow I'm off to LONDON! And while it's totally exciting that after 2 years I get to return, at the same time I know it's just for business and I'll be working more than I'll be playing. It's also sad that I'll have none of my favorites returning with me. It won't be the same without them there with me. Even the last week when I was there with my dad and not living in our super awesome flat on marylebone high st, it wasn't the same! But I'm excited to play with my new camera and just walk around all day Saturday. This whole 'free time' while you're doing business is a little nuts since I don't know whether or not to make plans of my own or see what everyone else is doing. I'll probably need some personal space away from the co-workers anyway by then, so maybe I'll just venture off by myself.

I'm sorry I have not blogged after the Oscars, it was a great evening. Lots of fun, I teared up a little, i got mad a little, every emotion in the playbook!

There were also many a topic for this blog I was thinking about over the past few days, and now I've got nothing. I'm going to bring my journal with me to London, and I will have some computer access, so no worries, I'll keep you guys posted! PEACE OUT!

I PREDICT that Heath Ledger will get it.... but here's what I think. Though Ledger did a GREAT performance, I think Downey Jr gave a GREAT performance ALSO. Ledger will get it because, well you know... but I think it would be awesome for RDJ to get it.

But some people though Penn sounded like his I am Sam character sometimes during Milk... so WHO KNOWS!

SLUMDOG. I enjoyed ALL of these films though, I must say! I've seen all of them and I really did think bits were great from each and every film is so different!

I've gotten to see ALMOST every one of these films that was nominated for these big ones... the only ones I've missed are VIcky Christina Barcelona, Frozen River and The Visitor. That's not so shabby!

Well I hope you all enjoy this evening... it's too bad Miley Cryus gets an ABC red carpet interview and others don't...

I'm also sad they're doing a Best Song medley this year instead of each song getting it's own time to showcase the song... Hence why Peter Gabriel won't be singing for Wall-E.

As for Hugh Jackman hosting, he's nice eye candy, but I hope he's funny as well!

I have now fallen down in NYC at least three times in the past 5 years. Tonight, Amy, Ali Fales and I had just stepped out onto the street after seeing 'Chicago' and less than a block away from the theater, I tripped on uneven pavement, my foot totally rolled into the lower, uneven part and BOOM. I was down. I stood up as quickly as I could, with Ali and Amy in tow, and just start LAUGHING at myself. Which is typical. haha so then towards the end of the block I was thinking, I should check to see if my pants have a hole in them now, since I landed right on my knee. So I look down, sure enough, it's not just a hole, my pants have SPLIT from one side seem to the other... straight tear right across my knee. Now I'm laughing and tearing up... also typical... because these are my FAVORITE pants. They're almost like the sisterhood of the traveling pants, but without the sisterhood part. They've been with me EVERYWHERE. Paris... London... Amsterdam.... I cannot think about how great these pants have been to me.

But so because I made Ali and Amy stop and take a picture of my tragic pants, we then saw an envoy coming down the block a few blocks over from 49th on 43rd. So we stop and decide to be THOSE people who stand and watch as the envoy comes to a stop and the canadian prime minister gets out. YEP. You may ask, but Obama was just up THERE visiting him in Canada?! Well I guess they travel quickly and he and his fam are staying at the Westin hotel in NYC on W. 43rd st. Just incase you were wondering.

On another note... THE OSCARS are tomorrow! Well now I guess technically today! I'm excited! But sometimes I wish I didn't get wrapped up in who's going to win and the odds of them winning, etc. I like to enjoy the surprise of it all. Maybe one year I'll skip all the prep, contests, reading and just GUESS based on which I thought were the best performances. I think I'll do that next year. Too often in life we're left with no surprises anymore... and i KNOW that the Oscars can have surprises, but still, I want to be surprised by it ALL.

I'll write tomorrow and tell you my predictions, since now I am TIRED and tomorrow night is going to be a late night.. Monday at work isn't going to be so pretty... : / ... that's one thing that will NEVER be a surprise... the Oscars never ending on time!

yea, let's CALL THAT BITCH UP!

Today I went to see "The Reader" and boy, Kate Winslet reallllyyy knows how to pick her happy-go-lucky scripts. I'm feeling so uplifted about life since I've seen this and Rev. Road. BOY OH BOY! let's all run out and get some ICE CREAM with M&M's on top. EXTRA m&ms for this time 'round.

I am going to just put this out there. I liked Kate better in "The Reader" than I did in "Rev. Road." (We're going to call Rev Road, RR from now on). RR had something missing. Adrien agrees. I said "I don't know what was missing exactly.... but maybe it was that lack of Celine Dion" SO there it is. CELINE DION must be involved in some sort of way whenever kate and leo make a movie together. I love me some kate and leo, so if Celine is what makes that extra magic, then bring on my favorite French-Canadian!

Also it was slightly awkward knowing my dad and gerri (his GF) were sitting right behind me (the theater was crowded, we had to sit apart) when there was penis and kate's boobs being shown. But such is life, and if I've seen Harry's Potter with my father in real life than I guess I can handle seeing one on the big screen with him, too.

So why the title of this blog post? I was sitting here chatting with Gerri and she told me Nikki's wedding pics were up. (Nikki is her daughter, my "common law step sister: if you will... or something like that) She then proceeded to tell me that she was a little upset that there were no good pictures of her and my father dancing or sitting together, but lots of the ex and his new wife. Sore subject. ANd none of me... how could that photographer... ahhaha. So my dad said, well we'll have to call her up and stage the wedding and do it over again. After looking at more pictures I turned around and yelled "YEA! Let's CALL THAT BITCH UP!"

I think Chelsea Handler is starting to rub off on me. I've started delivering jokes like her... but maybe I always have and just notice it more now... or she brought out more of the tongue in cheek, sarcastic side of me. You all should really listen to her book on CD for "Are you there vodka? It's me Chelsea". Hearing her read it is way more fun than reading it. Very entertaining. On Tuesday, I am going to start another book I got today. "I Am America (And so can you!)" by Stephen Colbert. I am also looking forward to the start of that one, but am slightly worried since this includes some pictures that I obviously wont' be able to see with the book on cd version.



WEll, I'm going to go drink wine and watch some television and then read some chick lit later. Sounds pretty perfect to me! Going to the see "The Wrestler" tomorrow. The last big film I have to REALLY see before the Oscars on SUNDAY! I can't believe they're only a week away already! Get ready for your favorite GOLD MAN!
